A five-step path to automating real, repetitive work with AI — without writing code. This is for people who want output, not theory: by the end you'll have built a working automation, not just watched other people build theirs.

Who this is for: you have a specific repetitive task in mind — at work, in a side project, or just in your own life — and you want to eliminate it using AI and automation tools, without learning to program.

Who this is not for: if you're still fuzzy on what AI actually is before touching any tools, start with the AI Fundamentals path first — steps 2 and 4 there feed directly into this one. If you already write code and want programmatic control over your automations rather than a visual builder, the Hands-On Coding resources on the dashboard will get you there faster than a no-code tool will.

The sequence

Learn the core building blocks of a workflow automation tool
Goal: understand triggers, actions, and nodes well enough to read someone else's automation and know what it does.
n8n is open-source, has the strongest first-party course of any automation tool on this list, and its visual workflow model transfers directly to Zapier and Make even if you end up using a different tool long-term. Work through the beginner course node by node — don't skip to advanced examples yet.

See the same ideas from a second, more mainstream tool
Goal: recognize that "trigger → action" is the shared shape of every automation tool, not something specific to n8n.
Zapier is the most widely used automation platform in ordinary workplaces, which matters if you ever need to automate something at a job where n8n isn't already installed. You're not switching tools — you're confirming the concepts from step 1 generalize.

Get oriented across the wider no-code tool landscape
Goal: know which category of tool to reach for (automation, database, form, AI layer) before you're several hours into the wrong one.
n8n and Zapier are automation-specific — but "no-code" also covers databases, site builders, and AI-layer tools that plug into your automations. A quick pass through a directory saves you from reinventing something that already exists as a plug-in tool.

Add an AI layer to your automations, not just conditional logic
Goal: move past "if this, then that" automations into ones that use an LLM step to summarize, classify, draft, or decide.
This is where automation becomes "AI automation" specifically — plugging a model call into the workflow you already know how to build. Follow along with real builds instead of just watching the business-strategy segments.

Join a community for troubleshooting and template ideas
Goal: have somewhere to ask "why doesn't this trigger fire" that isn't a general-purpose forum, and see finished builds for inspiration.
No-code automation has a lot of "it depends on your exact setup" debugging — a community with people actively building saves hours versus searching alone. Quality varies by community, so pick one that's actually active, not just large.

Your first automation

Automate one real, boring task you actually do

Pick something you personally repeat at least weekly — triaging an inbox, formatting notes into a consistent template, pulling new form submissions into a spreadsheet, or turning a webhook into a Slack/Discord alert. Build it in n8n or Zapier from step 1–2, then add one AI step from step 4 (summarize, classify, or draft a reply) so it's not purely mechanical.

You're done when you can show:

  • A working automation with at least one trigger, one AI-powered step, and one action
  • A short note on what broke the first time you ran it and how you fixed it — this is normal, not a sign you did it wrong
  • A rough estimate of the time it saves you per week now that it runs on its own

Where to go next

If step 4 was the most interesting part, look at the Hands-On Coding category on the dashboard for resources that go deeper into building AI agents with actual code instead of a visual builder — you'll hit ceilings with no-code tools eventually, and that's the natural next step. If your AI-generated automation steps aren't behaving the way you expect, the Prompt Engineering path covers exactly that. If step 1–2 were the most interesting part, there's more first-party n8n and Zapier content on the dashboard beyond what's linked here.
